A decendent of Eli Bedee

Eli's decision to come to America as a young boy, has lead to vast group of descendants, of which I am one. Whether religious persecution as a Huguenot was part of his decision, a young boys sprit of adventure, or just a storke of fate, I and many others are here today because he came to America and decided to stay.

Eli Bedee
(1699-1789)

 

Born Elie de Bedee about 1699 in France, on the Isle of Jersey. He was said to be a French Huguenot. In 1713, between the age of 12 to 14, he left his widowed mother and sailed with his uncle across the Atlantic, arriving in Boston. With-in a few months Eli moved to Hampton, New Hampshire and worked or was indentured on a farm. At the age of 21 in 1720 he settles on a farm in East Kingston, New Hampshire and marries Mehitable Sleeper. He had four sons and two daughters.

 
Judge Daniel Beede Esq. (1729 - 1799)

Daniel was active in public life in the towns where he lived, settling first in Brentwood, New Hampshire (now Fremont) where seven of his twelve children were born. He imbibed the principles of Quakerism, was attached to the Quakers, attended their meetings, and frequented their society, but never joined their church.
He moved to Gilmanton, New Hampshire where he lived about one year. During this time he surveyed the town of Sandwich, New Hampshire and led the first group of settlers here. Tradition says he built the first log house the night of their arrival, early in November 1767.
He held many public offices in Sandwich. June 15, 1795, he was appointed a judge of the court of common pleas of Strafford county.

Daniel Beede
Captain Daniel BEEDE Jr. (1752- 1833)

The second son born in Brentwood New Hampshire, he was a Captain of the 8th Company of Sandwich, NH in Colonel Badgers Regiment of Gilmanton during the Revolutionary War. However, he must have been promoted to Colonel sometime thereafter because his wife's gravestone reads "wife of Col. Daniel". Captain Daniel BEEDE Jr. and Dorothy "Dolly" HACKETT were married on 8 June 1775 in Concord, New Hampshire. They lived in Sandwich, NH and then moved to Madrid, ME in 1808 They had 12 children.

 
Captain Daniel BEEDY III (1784-1864 )

Daniel settled in Industry, Maine on the Lowell strip .He was a Captain in command of the Industry Company of Militia called out during the War of 1812. When he entered the army, he changed the spelling of his name from BEEDE to the American spelling of BEEDY. After the war he returned, cleared a farm and raised a large family in Industry, Maine.

 
Frederick Eveleth BEEDY (1813 - 1888)

During his early years he was a logger in the woods near Industry, Maine. He became a farmer, later he homesteaded near Friend, Nebraska.

 
James BEEDY (1846 - 1907)

Born in Franklin County, Maine, he enlisted in the Army during the Civil War at the age of 17. He was a private in Company K, 31st Regiment of the Wisconsin Infantry and marched with Sherman's Army from Atlanta to the sea. After the War he was in the Grand Review in Washington DC and later became a farmer and cattle rancher in Wisconsin. About 1876, after their four oldest children were born, they moved to Friend, NE. In the spring of 1885 they moved to a farm 5 miles north of Agra, where they stayed for 3 years, after which they homesteaded a farm 4 miles north of Agra, which is still (in 1998) owned by Jennie Beedy WITHAM's youngest son and his wife (Gerald and Dorothy WITHAM).

William Lewis BEEDY (1867- 1957)

Born in South Wayne, Wisconsin, moved to Agra, Kansas as a boy where he grew up, married and farmed till his death. A widower for 43 years.

Floyd William BEEDY (1893- 1965)

Born in Phillips County KS, farmed the faimily property until the depression when aquired addational acreage, moved to town, operated a gas station in Agra, operated a feed and grain hauling business and ran for sheriff.

Vernon L. BEEDY ( 1917 - 1973) Born In Phillips County KS. Raised in Agra KS. After high school played professional baseball for a traveling team. He enlisted in the Navy before the start of World War II and was stationed at Pearl Harbor December 7th 1941. He served the duration of the War in the Pacific. Attended college at Washburn University. He lived in Springfield Mo. Bedford Heights OH and Menomonee Falls WI. He worked a vocational physiologist and pioneered vocational rehabilitation programs.
Craig L. Beedy Born in Kansas City Mo, lived on the family farm as small boy, latter settling in Wisconsin. UW Whitewater business graduate. Works in the printing and publishing industry.
